The arms for the Cone #025 with Triangles and Squares are made following principles like those used for Heart #052 with Triangles and Squares. For the Cone you first prepare two assemblies with each 6 arms from four pieces of different colour and then you weave the two assemblies together like the simple Cone #001.
The pattern is the same as the pattern for Heart #052. The colours of the individual pieces were planned using the diagram below. The numbers correspond to the number of the “Part”.
For the item shown lowest on the picture, the pattern is the pattern shown on the sketch below.
Cut the following pieces in paper of quality 80 – 110 g/m2:
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 1” in colour A (here it is orange)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 2” in colour B (light green)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 3” in colour C (green)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 4” in colour D (red)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 5” mirrored (without the flap) “Part 1” in colour E (pink)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 6” mirrored “Part 2” in colour F (bright green)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 7” mirrored “Part 3” in colour G (dark green)
- 1 swirling piece with 6 arms “Part 8” mirrored “Part 4” in colour H (dark red)
- 2 arched strips in colour A
- 1 handle in colour A.
Preparing Assembly 1
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
Assembly 1
Assembly 1 is prepared from the four pieces Part 1 in colour A (orange), Part 2 in colour B (light green), Part 3 in colour C (green), and Part 4 in colour D (red). Observe that the stripes formed must all be “horizontal”.
- The first thing to do is to “twirl” together the two pieces, Part 1 and Part 2.
- Place the two pieces next to each other, arms swirling in the same direction, and the cone section to the left as indicated.
- Place Part 1 on top of Part 2. Line up.
- Now you must twirl the six arms one by one. Keep together the points of the two pieces with left hand’s thumb and forefinger. With your right hand lift up the arm behind (light green) and place it in front of the same arm of the other piece (orange) using the first notch along the right edge of the arms to make the colours shift while still maintaining the outer shape of the arm.
- Again lift up the arm in the lower layer and place it in front of the other arm using the next notch along the right edge to make the colours shift.
- Continue twirling until all notches are used.
- Place the assembly of Part 1 + 2 on top of Part 3 (green). Line up.
- Twirl the arms of Part 3 into the assembly as explained above.
- Place the assembly of Part 1 + 2 + 3 on top of Part 4 (red). Line up.
- Twirl the arms of Part 4 into the assembly as explained above.
Preparing Assembly 2
Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8
Assembly 2
Assembly 2 is prepared from the four pieces Part 5 in colour E (pink), Part 6 in colour F (bright green), Part 7 in colour G (dark green), and Part 8 in colour H (dark red). Observe that the stripes formed must all be “vertical”.
- The first thing to do is to “twirl” together the two pieces, Part 5 and Part 6.
- Place the two pieces next to each other, arms swirling in the same direction, and the cone section to the right as indicated.
- Place Part 6 (bright green) on top of Part 5 (pink). Line up.
- Twirl the six arms one by one.
- Place Part 7 (dark green) on top of Part 6 + 5. Line up.
- Twirl the arms of Part 7 into the assembly as explained above.
- Place Part 8 (dark red) on top of Part 7 + 6 + 5. Line up.
- Twirl the arms of Part 8 into the assembly as explained above.
Weaving the Cone
Place the point of assembly 1 on top of the point of assembly 2, arms swirling in opposite directions, and weave the cone from the two assemblies in the same way as you would weave Cone #001. However, because of the many layers it is not easy to make a pretty point. Thus use the rather large flap to keep together the small cone base by letting the flap stay on the outside of the cone when bent and glued into shape. The flap will mask any inaccuracy. Also you need no mould – just line up the cone using the woven pattern as guide.
The sketches below may be an inspiration, if you want to plan your own colour scheme.
