Take two of these 3 dimensional twirled heart shapes and make a swirling heart mobile for your Valentine.
Each pattern page includes pieces enough to make one heart structure. As you may like to twirl heart pieces of different colour cut out the page twice. Then you will have pieces enough to make two heart shapes. I used two different shades of red for my Valentine hearts. The six tiny pieces are used to stabilize the heart after twirling.
Do not lose heart when you see the long instructions. Once you have understood the principle the hearts are very easy to put together.
1. Take three of each piece A (here dark red and closed) and B (here bright red and open).
2. Crease and fold along the line of symmetry.
3. Unfold piece A(1) and place the folded piece B(2) as indicated. The pointed middle section of piece B(2) goes behind the middle section of piece A(1). Use the slit in piece B(2) so that only one end of piece B(2) goes in front of piece A(1).
4. Twirl the visible end of piece B(2) around piece A(1) as indicated.
5. Turn the first twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(2).
6. Take another folded piece A(3) and place it around the un-twirled end of piece B(2) as indicated. The un-twirled end of piece B(2) goes in between the two layers of piece A(3).
7. Twirl the un-twirled end of piece B(2) around piece A(3) as indicated.
8. Turn the second twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled side of piece A(3).
9. Take another folded piece B(4) and place it as indicated. The pointed middle section of piece B(4) goes behind the middle section of piece A(3). Use the slit in piece B(4) so that only one end of piece B(4) goes in front of piece A(3).
10. Twirl the visible end of piece B(4) around piece A(3) as indicated.
11. Turn the third twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(4).
12. Take another folded piece A(5) and place it around the un-twirled end of piece B(4) as indicated. The un-twirled end of piece B(4) goes in between the two layers of piece A(5).
13. Twirl the un-twirled end of piece B(4) around piece A(5) as indicated.
14. Turn the fourth twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled side of piece A(5).
15. Take another folded piece B(6) and place it as indicated. The pointed middle section of piece B(6) goes behind the middle section of piece A(5). Use the slit in piece B(6) so that only one end of piece B(6) goes in front of piece A(5).
16. Twirl the visible end of piece B(6) around piece A(5) as indicated.
17. Turn the fifth twirled section like a page in a book, exposing the un-twirled end of piece B(6).
18. Twirl the open end of piece B(6) with the un-twirled section of piece A(1).
19. Now the heart form has six twirled sections, However, the open ends need to be fixed and the project is to get a more firm structure.
20. First fix the six open ends of the B-pieces. Use glue to fix them to the A-pieces where they overlap.
21. Next use the three tiny pieces with a curve (same colour as the A pieces) to add together the three twirled sections at the hearts point. Fix half of the small piece to one section and the other half to the next. A pair of tweezers will be helpful.
22. Use the other three tiny triangular pieces (same colour) to fix the three sections near the top center of the heart structure in a similar way.
23. Unfold and distribute the six twirled “half hearts” evenly around the center.
24. Add a piece of string at the top center to hang the project.
Make a mobile attaching hearts to either end of a 14 cm long piece of piano wire. To make the hearts stay on the wire use round-nose pliers to make small eyes at the ends of the wire. Hang the assembly from a piece of string attached to the mid-point of the wire.
